Choosing The Best Domain Name For Your Website
After you have made the decision to create a web site, the next step is to choose a domain name that will be easy to remember, and help bring visitors to your website. The domain name is your address on the internet, without one people won't know where to go. With nearly 70 million domain names currently registered it can be difficult to find the right one for your business. This is where a little bit of thought and brainstorming can pay off with a successful domain name. Below are some ideas that can help create the right online identity for your business.
- Shorter is Better:
Try to keep your domain name between 5-20 characters, this will allow your name to be easily remembered and bring more visitors to your website. Even though 63 character domains are possible, how many of your users will remember a domain name like exampleofalongwebsitedomainname.com?
- .com is Better:
There are many domain name extensions available such as .net, .biz, .info, or .name, but most people are familiar with ".com", so it is still the best one to stick with. (.org is restricted to Non-Profit organizations and .edu for Post Secondary Institutions)
- Easy to Spell:
Try to keep the domain name easy to say and write down. Try avoiding dashes in the name. There can sometimes be problems when double letters are used together. Such as with the example DigitalLetters.com. This domain has double L's, and could create uncertainty whether to use one or two L's in the address. The double L's could also look strange if written without capitalization.
- Be Descriptive:
Try to use your business name or keywords that describe exactly what your website is about. Using your own business name will make the most of your existing branding efforts. If your business focus is in your local market place, then think about using your town name in your domain.

Remember that whatever your website's domain name is you will be able to use emails with that domain name. For example, if you registered example.com, then your email accounts could be sales@example.com and/or info@example.com.
HOW TO TRANSFER YOUR WEBSITE DOMAIN NAME
In order to provide you the best service possible and help manage your website and email, we suggest that you transfer your existing domain to our system (OpenSRS). While you still retain full ownership and access, this enables us to efficiently manage settings related to your domain name during the production and maintenance of your website. The following are instructions on how to complete the domain name transfer process.
(Domain name transfer will add one year to your domain name renewal date)
- Please provide us your username and password to the you Domain Registrar's website (This is the business that you registered your domain name with, such as: Network Solutions, GoDaddy, Register.com) If you have forgotten your login or password, you may need to use their password request form found on their website. We will login and Unlock the domain to allow the transfer process to take place.
- You will receive an email requesting your permission to transfer the domain name (The email will be from transfers@opensrs.org).
- Please read and follow the instructions on the email. Toward the bottom of the email there is a link asking that you confirm the transfer of your domain name. Clicking on this link will bring you to a website.
- Type the domain name and transfer key, both found in the email, and click Retrieve Transfer Request
- After this is confirmed, the request will be sent to your existing domain registrar for approval. Pending their approval the domain will be transferred and we will be able to move forward with your website. After approval the transfer may take between 5-7 business days.
